Chad starts out his sketch drawing with basic ovals and lines. The head of the character is always a great place to start!
“Don’t spend a lot of time at the beginning of your sketch, keep it simple. Use basic shapes and lines to get the overall feel and expression of the character before you start adding the detail” – Chad
Lots of artist who are just starting out have no idea where to begin. Chad takes you step by step and shows you just how he starts his cartoon drawings. Keeping in mind in the beginning they are nothing more than just a sketch at this point. Not a lot of detail is added.
One of the most challenging efforts when drawing your cartoon character is almost always the hand. Do you struggle creating hands for your cartoon character?
"Try drawing the hand as if your character was wearing mittens first and then building fingers later after you have the shape of the hand and proportions down!" -Chad
Chad walks you step by step for creating hands in a simple way. Again, keeping it simple in the beginning. Chad shows you how he uses basic ovals and lines to create the shape of the hand and then adding the fingers in later after tackling the basic shapes and proportions.
Just like creating the head and the hands, the body of your cartoon character is constructed the same way. Using ovals and gesture lines you will soon find out that drawing a cartoon character is not all that hard. Especially if you take the same steps that Chad takes.
“ If you can get a system into place when drawing or even painting , you will find what use to take you a half hour to do before should only take a few minutes.
I always start with simple gesture lines and ovals and add later. You too can do it and it should only take a few minutes to do!" - Chad
