DIGITAL PAINTING WITH CHAD BALDWIN

  • What is CartoonPaint.com?

Hello, my name is Chad Baldwin.  I am a a full time artist.  I currently work  as a graphic artist and also work as a freelance cartoonist creating digital cartoons on the computer.

As an artist just starting out with the digital medium I was always looking for how to training on digital painting.  I was constantly looking for answers to my questions.

What software is best for digital painting?

What pen tablet should I get?

Should I get a cheap tablet or spend the extra money for a professional tablet?

So after years of looking and finding answers to questions I would often run into other artists who were just starting out also and wanted to learn the basics of digital painting.  When explaining to other artists how I used a computer program to create my cartoons got me inspired to teach. I always thought it would be fun to teach a class on digital painting and teach all of the tricks I picked up along the way. I thought since I have the know how for creating a website and the know how for creating screen capture videos. I thought, why not put together a website that would teach other beginning artists about the basics of digital painting just as I learned.

So that is what i did.  I created CartoonPaint.com a one stop for everything related to cartoons and learning digital painting.  using the computer as the tool to get your final masterpiece.

  • What painting software do you use?

Starting from the Sketch (Sketchbook Pro)

There are quite a few different programs that I like to use.  Starting from the top when I first start out with my base sketch I really enjoy using Sketchbook Pro.  To me, the flow of the pencil tool in Sketchbook Pro flows a lot easier than it would in Painter or Photoshop.

    Painting the Illustration (Corel Painter)

Typically after i have created my sketch using sketchbook Pro I will then take and move my sketch into Corel Painter to work out the details and do most of the rendering.

    Painting the Illustration (Adobe Photoshop)

Once my illustration is fully rendered I will then take and drop it into Adobe Photoshop.  This is where I will let Photoshop shine!  Photoshop in my opinion is great for creating certain effects and doing all of my color corrections.

Learn as much as you can

You might ask yourself, “do I really need all of these software applications to create my artwork?”  My answer to that is yes and no.  Yes , you probably could get away with just using Photoshop or just using Corel Painter...  However after using all on the different applications I have found just like anything else,  different software programs are not all created the same, and function all differently.  So if you can afford to have multiple apps it just makes you that much more versatile.

    The Intous 4 Tablet

    (For the Mid to Advanced)

If you are serious about digital painting and would like a tablet the professionals use at a fair price. You can’t go wrong with this digital pen tablet. The pressure sensitivity is top notch allowing you to have full control over the pressure of your pen. This is the tablet I use and have been using for years now. I have never had any issues with my Intous tablet. The nice thing about the Intous tablet is you have some options as far as what size tablet you would like to use. So if you need a little more area for drawing you will have that option. The medium pen tablet will run you around $350.00. a bit pricy but I can say, it is very well worth it. This tablet will last you years to come.

    Cintiq 12WX 12-inch Pen Display

    (For the more Advanced)

If you have a little extra cash on hand and would like a digital tablet you can directly draw right onto. The Wacom Cintiq is the perfect tablet for that. I can honestly say I have never tried one of these tablets. I have always liked drawing on the tablet without my hand getting in the way. However, if you are really all about keeping it as traditional as possible and want to treat your tablet as if it was your sketch book. This is the tablet I would recommend.

Keep in mind this tablet will run you around $1,000 or so.
